How To Care for a U-Part Wig

The most important part of wearing hair extensions is making sure your real hair is healthy. The next most important thing is to take care of your hair extensions. Just like your real hair, human hair u-part wigs are susceptible to heat damage, split ends, and breakage. Following these easy steps will help you to take care of your U-part wig and make it last for years.

I purchased the wig on the left and made the wig on the right. They are both U-part wigs.

Wash Your Wig Gently

Although your wig is probably solidly constructed, you should wash it gently. The best way to wash a u-part wig is in the sink or in a basin. You shouldn’t scrub the wefts to vigorously because it will cause the hair to tangle. Instead, gently rub the hair in the palms of your hands. Cleansing conditioners may not sufficiently clean your wig, so use a sulfate-free shampoo. Depending on how much products you use on the wig, wash it 2 to 4 times.

Use Wash Out and Leave Conditioner

Real hair receives moisture from the natural oils your scalp produces. U-part wigs needs extra moisture since it does have contact with your scalp. The first step to replacing this moisture is to use a wash out conditioner every time you wash it. Every other wash you may want to use hair masque or deep conditioning treatment. In addition to these conditioners, you should apply a cream leave in conditioner to the wig when damp in order to seal in moisture.

Protein Treatments are a Plus

Protein treatments make hair stronger and they also work on human hair U-part wigs. These types of treatments should only be done twice a month, in addition to moisturizing treatments. If the hair begins to feel crunchy, then limit protein treatments to only once a month.

Trim the Ends

All human hair gets split ends. You will need to trim the wig even though you may not want to. If you don’t trim the ends of your U-part wig, the splits will travel up the hair shaft and destroy your wig. Trimming your wig is a necessary evil and it will help the hair to last longer.

Try to Limit Heat Styling

Heat tools damage all types of hair, which is why you should try to limit how much you use them. Try to only heat style our wig once or twice a month. To create curls without heat, try flexi rods. Consider purchasing virgin hair that matches the texture of your real hair so it will blend without having to use heat.
