Amsterdam: Cannabis and Canals

Amsterdam is such a beautiful city. It's quaint and metropolitan at the same time. There is so much history and they have great food, it's easily one of my top favorite cities in Europe.

Why do I love Amsterdam? I love that the city is pretty walkable. You can get anywhere in a 15 to 20-minute walk. Walking is one way to see the city. In the city center, there are a lot of small streets that don't allow cars so I really enjoyed walking around. Another way to get around the city is by bike. There are so many bikes it's crazy to see. A lot of people ride bikes everywhere and it's perfectly safe. I can't swim so I was scared of falling into a canal so I skipped the bike riding.

Dam Square

My second favorite way to see the city was the canal tours. The view from the canal boats is so beautiful. There are also some pretty cool houseboats. The tour guides taught me so much about the history of the city and how the canals went through the different neighborhoods. I also learned how the canals were such a central part of the development of the city. I took a hop on hop off bus which made it easy to see all the sights in one day.

Usually, when I go to European countries I am not excited about the food. Amsterdam was different. They eat french fries as the most popular street food and I love it. The mayonnaise sauce is gross. The curry ketchup is more tolerable. One of the more authentic Dutch food that I tried was bitterballen. They are deep-fried balls of sausage and mash potatoes. Some other traditional Dutch food I loved was mushroom soup and duck.

An evening in the Red Light District

I absolutely love their deserts. Stroopwaffle cookies are one of my top 5 desserts after visiting Amsterdam. They also make amazing Belgian waffles. Another popular food is Dutch pancakes. These pancakes are like half crepe and half American pancake. They can be sweet or salty. I prefer sweet. I went to the very popular restaurant Pancakes American Centraal. The line for breakfast is ridiculous so go for lunch or a snack.

Let's discuss some attractions and places to go to. The most discussed attraction is the Heineken Factory. It's way overhyped. The tours are large and they push you threw like a school trip of grown-ups. There are LCD light displays flashing and tasting of beers at different stages in the brewing process. The beer was the freshes and best Heineken I ever tasted. You can probably get the same tasting beer in any local bar since it's on tap unlike in America.

The second most talked about places are in a tie: the coffee shops and red-light district. I didn't really explore the red light district. On a Saturday night, I walked down the main street in the red light district and that's pretty much all I did. It was packed and you could barely get through the streets. The women were in the windows just like I've seen in documentaries. I didn't go to any of the sex shows either but the lines were really long so they are definitely a thing to do.

Central Station.

I can tell you about the coffee shops. There are so many coffee shops. The coffee shops are where they sell marijuana products. What I loved is that there are so many different flavors of coffee shops. Some coffee shops are hip-hop/top 40 bars. Other coffee shops look like high-end boutiques and I even saw one that looks like a natural food supermarket.

They have all kinds of cannabis products. Pre-rolls, edibles, and everything in between. They have free lighters for you to use and the customer service is great. I went to one right by my hotel. I felt safe and comfortable. The only warning I would give is that the canals have no barriers so do not fall in after you leave the coffee shops.

A picture from A’dam Lookout

The last attraction that I highly recommend is A'dam lookout, it's so cool. I didn't do enough research before I went and I almost missed it. It's one of the highest points in the city that everyone should visit. Just walk through Central Station and hop on the free ferry. The free ferry takes you straight there and you pay less than 20 euros to go up to the point. The pictures you'll get absolutely Instagram worthy. Amsterdam is a lovely city and you should definitely include it in your Euro tour.
