Vacation Hairstyles

I love traveling and going on vacation. Relaxing on the beach, trying new foods, and learning about different cultures. It is so exciting to me! One of the hardest decisions I face before every trip I go on is "How am I going to wear my hair?"

The answer is different for every trip because it really depends on what activities I plan to do on my vacation. Here are some ideas that are usually my favorites when choosing a hairstyle for my next adventure.

Bun

My favorite hairstyle to wear on vacation is a bun. The way I create my bun is to on top of my head with a bun former. Unlike other hairstyles, a bun keeps your hair off your face while still looking sleek and stylish. If you decide to swim or go to the beach, it's easy to wash your hair and restyle it.

If you're looking for some variety you can lower your bun to the nape of your neck for more of a chignon type of look. Pulling your hair up or back does cause a lot of tension for your edges. So after the trip, you may want to consider wearing another style.

Braids

After a bun, braids are the next best hairstyle for a vacation. Box braids or cornrows will both protect your hair from the elements while you are enjoying a vacation. Cornrows don't offer versatility however, you won't have to worry about styling them. Cornrows can cause tension along the hairline, so it is important to keep them moist in order to prevent hair loss.

Box braids can be styled in different ways while still protecting your hair. The smaller the braids, the longer it will take to have your hair initially styled. That is something to definitely take into consideration. A happy medium would be large sized "poetic justice" braids that can be styled and easily removed. Only keep this style for 3 to 4 weeks in order the prevent damage to your real hair.

Wigs (U-part or Full)

Depending on what you are going to do on your vacation, wigs can be a great hairstyle option. If you plan on doing a lot of swimming or going to the beach, you can remove your wig and wear a head tie to protect your hair.

Wigs are not very secure so they would not be a good choice for an amusement park or sporting activities. Purchasing a wig can be a tedious process, so two months before your trip start researching wigs. A month before you leave, your wig should already be made or purchased.  It is vital that you moisturize your hair under the wig every night before you go to bed.

Weave

Personally, I have not worn a weave in years. However, I do think that they are a great choice for a vacation hairstyle. Weaves are very secure, so you will be able to swim and complete other sports activities. Also, it may be easier to achieve that glam look that you would want for the Captain's Ball or for a night out on the town.  It's a convenient style and it will last for your entire trip.

Unfourtaley, there are also some drawbacks to wearing weave. If you leave your weave in for more than 3 weeks, you risk causing severe damage to your real hair. Additionally, if you leave some of your hair out then it will require high levels of manipulation in order to blend with the weave hair. Buying weave that is similar to your natural texture will limit this issue. Drying the braids underneath your weave may also be a problem, especially if you will be swimming multiple days on your trip. Indique makes some of my favorite virgin hair, so their website is a great place to start.
