Belize City and Caye Caulker

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of visiting Belize. I had such an amazing time learning about the country that it inspired me to finally start a travel page!

Belize has a such an interesting history because of its unique blend of cultures. On my trip, I spent a day and a half in Belize City and 3 and a half days in Caye Caulker. Both places offer different experiences, however, my favorite was Caye Caulker.

The Belize sign. A part of our driving tour.

After landing at the Belize City airport, my sister and I (she's my favorite travel partner) received a driving tour from our taxi driver. Of course, this came at a price,  $40 (for two people) for a cab ride that was supposed to cost $20.

The currency exchange from United States Dollar to Belize Dollar is 1 to 2. Almost all of the business accept US dollars, however, the change you receive will be in Belize dollars. Also, most Belizeans speak English so in most situations there won't be a language barrier.

As of July 29, 2018

Belize City is not a beach town, it is more of a city by the water. There are different stores and restaurants that were within walking distance of our hotel. We sent our first night at the Belcove Hotel, which is more of a hostel than a hotel. The staff is very helpful and the rooms are clean.

One activity that I enjoyed was visiting the Museum of Belize. Although I did do some research before my trip, this museum gave me a different perspective on the country. I would also recommend Celebrity Restaurant for some truly delicious Belizean food.

Caye Caulker was our next stop after exploring Belize City. There are multiple companies that run ferries at various times throughout the day. After 45 minutes we arrived on the beautiful island that will immediately give you those picturesque beach vibes.  We stayed at Island Magic a cool resort hotel. It was slightly overpriced but, it was close to restaurants and gave us ocean views from a nice balcony.

The Split!

The first place we went to after changing into our bathing suits was The Split. Basically, The Split is a small shallow in the ocean next to an awesome bar, The Lazy Lizard.  The water at The Split starts at like 2 feet and gradually gets deeper as you go further out into the ocean. Happy hour starts at 5. Not only is The Split free, it's also one of the most popular locations on the island. The fried fish burger at The Lazy Lizard is delicious.

Koko King is the next go-to spot on Caye Caulker. Since most of the island's beaches are covered in mangroves, Koko King is one of the few places where you can experience the beach. The boat ride there is free as long as you spend 20 Belizean dollars on food and drinks. The boat leaves about every 15 to 20 minutes. The beach has free chairs in addition to cabanas available for rent. The drinks and food are delicious. I recommend the crab claw entree and the Koko tea.

The restaurants on the island make a variety of food. Closer to the split there are dozens of street vendors also selling food. While I was there, it was the lobster season, so every restaurant had lobster on the menu. I got one from Rosy's it was grilled to perfection.

In terms of nightlife, Sports Bar and Grill (yes that is the name) is the most popular place on the island. It's basically a frat party vacation style, featuring one or two street dogs. It could be fun but I didn't stay long. One upside was each shot was like a double shot so you get your money worth.
